The largest hamlet in Southampton, NY, is Southampton itself, with an incorporated village that serves as the town seat. It is the oldest and most densely populated community in the Hamptons, with a significant population and a variety of neighborhoods and housing types. This diverse community has an urban core with first-class amenities and a sandy shoreline famed for the summer getaways of the Hamptons. In Southampton, you will find elegant estates, stunning beaches, exceptional shopping and dining, and a variety of year-round events.

Downtown Southampton is one of the Hamptons’ largest and most diverse commercial districts with a fantastic range of restaurants and stores. 75 Main is a chic spot for creative takes on classic Italian dishes from James Beard Award-winning chef, Mark Militello. The Golden Pear is an upscale café with delicious breakfast and lunch choices. It is a local fave and always fun to pop in to.  Citarella Gourmet Market is quite the place to pick up high-end take-home foodstuffs, enjoy a coffee, soup or a meal. It is a favorite among locals and visitors alike! Take-home items include prime-aged meat and fresh seafood, while Citarella’s meals include fresh brick oven pizzas, sushi made to order at the dedicated sushi counter, sandwiches and a myriad of scrumptious prepared items. The bustling downtown area is a hub for arts and culture. Southampton Arts Center provides studio space for artists and hosts frequent special exhibitions and events. Southampton Cultural Center has an art gallery and performance space for classical music recitals and plays. Tripoli Gallery of Contemporary Art hosts exhibits and installations that showcase the work of talented artists at the forefront of contemporary art. Southampton Historical Museum is an open-air history museum with 12 buildings that detail the town’s early development.

Village real estate here is a hot commodity due to its proximity to Main Street. It is often defined by classic, lush privacy hedges and gates, offering a rare sense of seclusion. Village residents access ocean beaches via the village’s beach permit system to include Coopers Beach (the largest with lifeguards and amenities and consistently ranked among the top ten beaches in the US), Dune Beach (resident-only parking), Cryder Beach, Fowler Beach, Halsey Neck Lane Beach, Gin Lane Beach, Little Plains Beach, Old Town Beach, and Road D Beach, among others along approximately seven miles of oceanfront.  Village permits also allow access and parking at these locations during the summer, distinct from the Town of Southampton’s separate beaches and permit system. Residents residing within the Village are responsible for both Town and village taxes.
